MDM Soundscape

April 1st, 2008 by mdleast in Music for Digital Media · 2 Comments

For this assignment, we were asked to create the sounscape to a scene of a movie of our choice. I decided to do this scene, because i felt i could incorporate many exciting elements to the scene, plus the original was such well orchestrated and designed, i felt compelled to try and create something of equal quality. I devided the scene into sections, the first being the intro with the glowing hand and the clouds parting, the next being the close up of the clouds and lightning, the next the crowd, then the growth of the monster from the clouds, and to end the monster flying towards the crowd. this gave me specific areas to work on, dividing the workload into managable chunks. when i first started working on this piece, i tried to make the majority of the scene up using sculputre etc, with the obvious inclusion of samples like for example people screaming. after coming back to this, i realised that the sounds all seemed to fuse into one solid void of noise. since coming back to it, i have spend alot of time mastering the sounds to try and make them drift through the scene, without blending. i have spent a long time on the automation, mainly on pan and volume, i have also automoted other areas of DSP, like for example automating the frequency cut offs in high pass filters and knee of compressions etc full write up, screenshots etc to follow. i hope you like it. i’m happy with the current state my piece is at. obviously it still needs work, but i think its coming on prettty well.p.s sorry about the frame rate of the video, during compression i set the vid at 12fps by mistake. although this has kept the size down, the quality isnt fantastic and its a little juddery. i’ll re-upload the video asap

acousmatic task 1, the ixi quarks atempt

March 31st, 2008 by mdleast in Music for Digital Media · 2 Comments

this is my second version of task 1. on my 1st  attempt i found i got lost in the void known as metasynth/melodyne/ spear (not a great deal), and after spending hours tweaking and re-tweaking the sound, i wasn’t amazed by the outcome. sure it was alright, but not mind blowing. with this attempt i have only used ixi quarks which i have to say is awesome for these acousmatic tasks. as we werent allowed to cut and paste at all, i felt wither ixi or metasynth would be the ideal for this assignment. this was recorded in one attempt, using the sound scratcher and grain box only. it needs work, but is coming on ok. i have used no dsp or anything else so far, so what you hear is the original recording from within quarks. let me know what u think, and what the original sample was, even though in sections of the piece it is quite apparent    if the sound is off i’ll sort it out asap. i’ve only had my mac speakers to use which hasn’t been fun! acousmatic task 1, the ixi quarks attempt

roy_st.gifhey guys, i was in the library earlier reading up on granular synthesis in the Wischard book, and stumbled across this guy. his album Migrations, i feel is great listening for acousmatic composition, as it has some great examples of granulation etc, plus its really interesting to hear a diffferent form of acousmatic.  also, check out the other cultures electroniques cd’s; there are quite a few, and there really is some strange and wonderful stuff on them! p.s look what i stumbled across when i stumbled across when looking for some of julio’s work. enjoy!julio-descrivan.jpg

Task 4 Soundscape

November 20th, 2007 by mdleast in Music for Digital Media · No Comments

http://www.divshare.com/download/2824000-7d4

With this assignment, i found it rather difficult to actually pick a video to design a soundscape for. following the lecture last week, i decided to make one  for a sci-fi movie, as i felt i would be able to create something fairly successful. I decided on this video, because i was blown away by the audio, both soundscapes and melodically from the original. i also felt that the section contained lots of different key areas that i could build the sounds from. Full Write up to follow later

stuff i thought i should mention

October 30th, 2007 by mdleast in Music for Digital Media · 1 Comment

hey people, following our lecture today, i thought i’d mention some stuff you might find interresting/ useful.

first, if your having problems with chords etc, there is a very useful widget you can download called chord finder. if you go to manage widgets (hit f12, then press the + icon in the bottom left corner) then search for chord finder. i find it very useful, as my theoretical knowledge is in a word, shite!!!

also check out the film children of men. its a great example of a great british film, but also is a great example of sound usage in film, there are no musical additions to the film; only music based in the film like we discussed in the gta coke advert today ( sorry could not remember the terminology)

one last thing, more of a question really. i downloaded the download helper for firefox so we can extract movies from youtube etc. but i can only seem to download clips that try and open as flash files, which i can then not play even though i have the most up to date version of flash player and designer! any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers people, take it easy
